SSL

Hi guys,
I'm doing a Windows SBS 2003 server install for a client and he wants/needs:
1 - a pop connector that downloads faster than the 15 minute resolution offered by Microsoft
2 - they use gmail for their email server which requires SSL; also requires different port settings for pop and smtp
3 - I noticed the professional version of popgrabber includes SSL
Question:
Will the Pro version provide all I need for this installation?
I'm using the free version on my SBS server here at my shop and it does a great job for me, but I'm not using SSL or different ports.
Thanks
Don

Hello again,
All PopGrabber versions support a download interval of 1 minute or more, the POP3 port can be freely configured in PopGrabber and although the free and standard versions do not support SSL, the professional version does.
The answer is yes, the Pro version will provide all you need. However, if you only use 3 POP3 accounts or less, you can still use the free version with an SSL proxy like STunnel (see
http://forum.eclarsys.com/index.php?topic=13.0
) or with ClamMail (see
http://www.eclarsys.com/popgrabber/clammail.php
).

OK - I purchased the pro version and installed it.
At first,
on the SBS server, using the IE wizard, I configured for smtp.gmail.com, eturn, ssl, and authentication.
Then,
on the pro popgrabber, I setup one of the accounts to pop the email from pop.gmail.com, with the destination going to the exchange server.
I was able to receive incoming mail but on the outgoing mail, the return address was the account that was setup to authenticate the outgoing mail at smtp.gmail.com.
I downloaded the pdf file for configureing, and made some changes in the exchange system manager as described in the pdf file.
The server protocols, connection, and messaging. Now, I'm unable to receive or send email, and don't know how to set the parms back to the default position. I put them back to where I think they were originally.
Bottomline, I need some assistance in getting these two pieces to communicate with other correctly.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Don

What error message are you getting in PopGrabber? Is PopGrabber installed in the same computer as the Exchange Server?
For outgoing email make sure you configure authentication on your Exchange server using an SMTP connector or in the virtual server. This part of the configuration is not described in the PDF document because it depends on how your server is set up.
For outgoing E-Mail, please check the following Microsoft document
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/265293
For incoming E-Mails, we need to know what kind of error you are getting in PopGrabber, in order to help you further.

Hello,
We looked up some information regarding the GMail SMTP server. Apparently, GMail always changes the sender's E-Mail address to the GMail account used to login to the SMTP server.
If you have a server hosting the domain from your customer I recommend you use the SMTP server installed there, if you do not have an SMTP server available, check with your Internet Service Provider to see if they provide one.
Regarding the incoming email, please open the PopGrabber Console (or the logfiles in the program directory directly) and post the error messages here.

Just found something else:
Quote
When using the SMTP service Gmail rewrites your From: address back to your original Gmail address. However you can add another verified e-mail address to your account, then Gmail's SMTP server will forward any From: address that match.
* Log in to your Gmail account.
* Click 'Settings' along the top of any page, and then select the 'Accounts' tab.
* Click 'Add another email address' in the 'Send mail as:' section.
* Enter your full name in the 'Name:' field, and the email address you'd like to send messages from in the 'Email address:' field.
* Click 'Next Step >>,' and then click 'Send Verification' to complete the process. Gmail will send a verification message to your other email address to confirm that you'd like to add it to your Gmail account.
* Now go to your e-mail client software to setup your e-mail account.
* Under e-mail address, use one of the verified e-mails you've added to your Gmail account.
* Under outgoing mail smtp server, use smtp.gmail.com. Since it requires SMTP authorization, use your Gmail account as username (e.g.
yourname@gmail.com
) and your Gmail password as password. You can turn TSL on or off.
Don't forget that Gmail's SMTP places a limit on the number of e-mails you can send within a certain time period.

I tried using the smtp server that I use at smtp.att.yahoo.com. I configured it in the I&E wizard, but it appeared to not work.
However, this morning, I found that the smtp virtual server was configured to deliver once every hour. I changed that to the same as my server here at my shop. That may be why I thought it wasn't working, because of the hour delay.
Tonight, I will reconfigure his server in the I&E wizard to use the smpt.att.yahoo.com server, and see if the new delievery schedule makes a difference.
Thanks for letting my know that this issue is by design (gmail) and not something I had configured wrong.

Thanks again for the new information.
My client has several email addresses, one for each user. (5)
They also have their domain name supported by gmail. The problem is, which ever address is configured in the I&E wizard, that is the one listed as the return email address. I first started out by using the manager's email address in the I&E wizard, and it was his that showed up as the return address. I then changed to their master
xx@gmail.com
address in the I&E wizard, and then that was the listed return address.
Are you saying that there is a way I can get around that by reconfiguring his account at gmail?
Thanks

It seems so, although we have not tested this ourselves.
If gmail is hosting the accounts, then it must be somehow possible to add these addresses to the outgoing account, but you will have to contact gmail support for confirmation on how to do that or try it and see if it works as mentioned above.

Thanks for all your help.
I configured the SBS exchange to use another smtp server, and all is well.
Thanks
