Hi, I have a question regarding virus scanning.

We are currently using your product to distribute emails.
We are wondering if emails are scanned before distribution, by the server anti virus software - Sophos?
I.E. are emails scanned like normal files by the on access scanner?

Could you please advise?

Thank you

Hello,

PopGrabber does not make copies of the emails on disk before forwarding them. So in order for the Antivirus to detect viruses it should scan the messages as they are received by the server (either while downloading using POP3 or while forwarding them to the SMTP server). Most modern scanner will do this, but I am not sure about Sophos, please check the documentation of the software to see if any additional steps are necessary to enable this.

We checked out the Sophos website and found that to filter SMTP traffic, Sophos uses the "MailMonitor for SMTP" component.

If you are using Exchange, there is a "PureMessage for Microsoft Exchange" module. Please note the configuration changes for POP3 Connectors described here: http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/30487.html

To use the MailMonitor for SMTP, apparently you need to make some changes in the SMTP port as described here: http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/10216.html

Another option is to use the free ClamMail antivirus to scan incoming messages as described here: http://www.eclarsys.com/popgrabber/clammail.php

Let us know if this works for you.

We are using Pure message from Sophos in conjunction with pop grabber standard and ms exchange 2003.
It works brilliantly well, we did have slight issue at first; when the latest version of pure message was released it suddenly started detecting all mail as internal and was not filtering for spam.
After some discussion with Sophos support we added the local server IP to the trusted relay section and all is well now.
